Swedish civics test study material: Sverige i fokus

Which study material exists for the Swedish citizenship test? How to use UHR's official material Sverige i fokus, in text and audio.

By Anna Lindberg8 min read

The official study material for the Swedish citizenship test is called Sverige i fokus and is available free of charge from the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR). The material was produced by UHR together with Skolverket on behalf of the government, and the material's introduction states that the test is based on it. That means the citizenship test, which becomes a requirement for Swedish citizenship from 6 June 2026, has a clear and free source to study from. This guide walks through which resources exist, what Sverige i fokus contains and how you actually use it to prepare.

Which study materials exist for the test?

There is one official material and a flood of unofficial ones. The difference matters.

  • Sverige i fokus — UHR's own study material, the only one the test is explicitly based on. Free at uhr.se, as text and audio.
  • Unofficial summaries, apps and question collections — can be a good complement for practice, but no outside party knows the test's exact questions.
  • Practice questions — to test your knowledge actively and see where you stand, for example at medborgaretest.se.

The weight should be on Sverige i fokus. The other resources exist to practise and revise that material, not to replace it.

What is Sverige i fokus?

Sverige i fokus is a study material with the subtitle Grundläggande kunskaper om det svenska samhället (basic knowledge of Swedish society). It is aimed at you who are going to take the citizenship test to demonstrate exactly that kind of knowledge.

The material was produced by UHR together with Skolverket on behalf of the government and published in 2026 in its first edition. The material's introduction states it plainly: "The test will be based on this material" (Sverige i fokus, UHR and Skolverket 2026, introduction). That is unusually clear — you know exactly which text your knowledge will be tested against.

UHR standing behind the material is also why it carries more weight than any study site. It is the same agency that produces and is responsible for the test itself.

Where do I find the material and in what formats?

You download Sverige i fokus free of charge at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/utbildningsmaterial. It comes in two formats:

  • PDF — the whole material as a single document to read on screen or print out.
  • Audio — the material recorded in 14 audio files, one per section — the introduction and all thirteen chapters each have a file.

The audio is worth using. Listen to a chapter on a walk or on public transport, then read the same section in the PDF. Meeting the content in two ways makes it easier to remember.

A short chapter map

Sverige i fokus is divided into chapters that together paint a picture of Swedish society. Here is an overview of what they cover:

  • Landet Sverige (the country of Sweden) — geography, climate, nature and natural resources.
  • Sveriges demokratiska system (Sweden's democratic system) — democracy as government by the people, and threats to democracy.
  • Så här styrs Sverige (how Sweden is governed) — the state, regions and municipalities, and the system of government.
  • Politiska val och partier (elections and parties) — elections, voting and how the parties work.
  • Lag och rätt (law and justice) — the fundamental laws, the legal system and the rule of law.
  • Mediernas roll (the role of the media) — free media, public service and source criticism.
  • Mänskliga rättigheter (human rights) — gender equality, children's rights and the work against discrimination.
  • Arbetsmarknad och privatekonomi (the labour market and personal finances) — the social partners, tax and personal finance.
  • Välfärdssamhället (the welfare society) — how welfare is financed and distributed.
  • Sveriges moderna historia (Sweden's modern history) — the path from an agricultural country to a welfare society.
  • Sverige och omvärlden (Sweden and the world) — Nordic, European and global cooperation as well as defence policy.
  • En sekulär stat och ett mångreligiöst land (a secular state and a multi-religious country) — freedom of religion and the role of religion.
  • Traditioner och högtider (traditions and holidays) — recurring Swedish holidays through the year.

The material is therefore broader than a simple list of subjects. The content can also be described in terms of the overarching knowledge areas the test is built on — read more about the knowledge areas in detail to understand how the content is grouped for the test.

Text or audio — which works best?

Having the material in both formats is a strength, because each works better in different situations. You do not have to choose one over the other — the best approach is often to use them together.

  • The PDF suits you when you are sitting undisturbed and want to pause, go back in the text and underline. It is also good if you want to print the material and make notes in the margin.
  • The audio files suit you when you are on the move anyway — on the bus, on a walk or while cooking. Because there is one file per section, you can easily re-listen to a section you want to consolidate.

A common and effective rhythm is to first listen to a chapter for an overview, then read it in the PDF for the details. Meeting the content in two formats means more of it sticks, and it breaks the studying up so it can carry on over several weeks instead of one long session.

How to use the material — step by step

Just leafing through the PDF once is rarely enough. Here is how to get more out of Sverige i fokus:

  • Read one chapter at a time. Take one section at a time instead of trying to swallow everything in one evening. The material is written to be read at a calm pace.
  • Alternate reading with listening. Listen to the chapter's audio file and then read the same section, or the other way around. The repetition fixes the content.
  • Work area by area. Go through the chapters in order so you cover the whole breadth — from how Sweden is governed to traditions and holidays.
  • Practise actively between chapters. Test yourself with questions instead of just re-reading. You quickly notice what has stuck and what you need to revise.

It is through practice that you discover your weak points. A cohesive plan for the whole study process — with time estimates and an order to follow — is in the guide how to study for the Swedish citizenship test.

Understand context instead of memorising

The test measures basic knowledge of Swedish society, according to UHR around 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. It rewards an understanding of how things connect more than rote knowledge of individual dates.

So try to see the connections as you read. How do the Riksdag, the government and the public agencies fit together? Why do the fundamental laws exist and what do they protect? When you understand the logic, individual facts become easier to remember — and you stand more firmly on questions phrased in a way you have not seen before.

If you want to see examples of how questions on different areas can look, and why a particular answer is correct, there are sample questions for the Swedish citizenship test with answers. Keep in mind that UHR has not yet published any official sample questions — such examples are illustrations built on the knowledge areas, not real test questions.

Official material over unofficial

Plenty of summaries, apps and question collections appear ahead of a new test. Some are thorough, others less reliable. The advice is simple:

  • Start from Sverige i fokus. It is the source the test is built on, and everything else should be measured against it.
  • Use unofficial material as a complement. Practice questions and revision are valuable — but check claims against UHR and Migrationsverket if something feels uncertain.
  • Be sceptical of confident "test questions". No one outside UHR knows the test's questions in advance. Material that promises the exact questions cannot be trusted.

FAQ

What is the official study material for the Swedish citizenship test?

It is called Sverige i fokus and was produced by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) together with Skolverket on behalf of the government. It is available free of charge at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/utbildningsmaterial as a PDF and as audio files. UHR describes it as the material the citizenship test is based on.

Does the study material cost anything?

No. Sverige i fokus can be downloaded free of charge from uhr.se, both as a PDF and as audio files. You do not need to buy a book or a course to read the material the test is built on.

Is the material available as audio?

Yes. UHR offers Sverige i fokus both as a PDF and as recorded audio, in 14 audio files — one per section, where the introduction and all thirteen chapters each have a file. That lets you listen to the sections, for example on a walk or on public transport, and alternate reading with listening.

Is reading Sverige i fokus enough to pass the test?

The material is the central source because the test is based on it, but reading through it once is rarely enough. Complement your reading by listening to the sections and by practising questions, so you notice which areas you need to revise.

Should I trust unofficial study sites and apps?

Always start from UHR's own material Sverige i fokus, which is the source the test is built on. Unofficial summaries, apps and question collections can be a good complement for practice, but check their claims against UHR and Migrationsverket before you trust them — no outside party knows the test's exact questions in advance.

Next step

The material is free and clear, and the test is based on it. The most effective preparation is to read Sverige i fokus, listen to the sections and then practise actively on questions until you can see where your knowledge sits and where it needs building out.

Download Sverige i fokus from uhr.se and start to practice on medborgaretest.se in parallel — that way you always know which areas you need to spend more time on.
