Swedish Citizenship Test App: What It Can and Cannot Do

Yes, apps exist to help you practise for the Swedish citizenship test, and web services that do the same thing without a download — medborgaretest.se is one of them. On 31 July 2026, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported on an app built by a developer in Skellefteå, with 400 questions in six languages. An app does three things well — it translates questions you don't understand, reads them aloud, and lets you revise in short bursts. But the test itself is written in Swedish, on paper, and phones are not allowed at your seat. An app is a training tool, not a shortcut.

The developer behind the app works in IT and has lived in Sweden for 20 years. According to SVT Västerbotten, the app contains 400 questions about Sweden drawn from the study material of the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR), and users can switch quickly between reading a question in their own language and hearing it read aloud in Swedish.

"Den ska underlätta att förbereda sig" — it should make preparing easier — he told SVT.

Asked whether this amounts to cheating, he answered: "Jag menar inte att provet inte ska vara på svenska. Men det är viktigt att man förstår frågan helt och hållet." (I'm not saying the test shouldn't be in Swedish. But it matters that you understand the question completely.)

Some parts of the app are free, others cost money. Asked what feedback he has received, he says among other things that people want the app in more languages. That says something about the need: the official material is currently in Swedish, so anyone who isn't a native speaker meets the language and the civics content at the same time.

The app is one example of a whole category of tools. This site, medborgaretest.se, is another. What an app genuinely helps with

Four things make an app better than a PDF on a phone:

• Understanding the question. Not knowing the answer is different from not understanding what is being asked. A translation lets you spend your time on the subject matter rather than on vocabulary.
• Revising in short bursts. Ten questions on the bus works. A PDF chapter rarely does. Short, repeated sessions are also what makes knowledge stick over time.
• Hearing how the words sound. Audio connects spelling to pronunciation, which helps later when you read the questions in Swedish without support.
• Finding the gaps. A practice service shows which knowledge areas you keep missing. That is hard to spot on your own while reading.

What an app cannot do

This part deserves plain speaking, whichever app you choose:

• The test is only written in Swedish. UHR answers on its website: "Nej, medborgarskapsprovet kan bara göras på svenska" (No, the citizenship test can only be taken in Swedish). According to UHR, the test consists of around 60 multiple-choice questions with four answer options, the actual test time is 90 minutes, and the test is written on paper.
• Your phone stays outside. Under UHR's test-day rules you may not bring "mobiltelefon, smarta klockor, digitala klockor och annan elektronisk utrustning" (mobile phones, smart watches, digital watches and other electronic equipment) to your seat. The same applies to "hörlurar, airpods eller liknande" (headphones, AirPods or similar) and to other aids that can store, contain, send or receive information, such as smart glasses and electronic pens. • No app has the actual test questions. All UHR has published is five examples of how the questions may be worded. Questions advertised as "the real ones" are not, as we explain in our article on fake test questions.
• No app is approved by UHR. The agency writes on its study material page: "Det kan finnas övningsprov på internet som andra personer eller företag har tagit fram. UHR vill vara tydliga med att vi inte står bakom dessa och att kvaliteten på dem inte är kontrollerad av oss eller någon annan myndighet." (There may be practice tests online created by other people or companies. UHR wants to be clear that we do not stand behind them and that their quality has not been checked by us or by any other authority.)
• Nobody can promise a pass. Neither the number of questions in an app nor a good score in it tells you reliably how the real test will go. Treat guaranteed results as marketing.

Use translation as a step, not as the destination

Because the test can only be taken in Swedish, translation works best as a support you gradually remove. A sequence that works:

1. Read the question in Swedish first, even if it is slow going.
2. Switch to your own language only when you get stuck.
3. Go back and read the Swedish wording once more, now that you know what it means.
4. In the final weeks before the test: practise entirely in Swedish, without translation.

The point is that test day offers no support at all. The more of your practice that has already happened in Swedish, the less is new to you in the exam hall. Note at the same time that the August test measures civic knowledge, not language — a separate Swedish language test is introduced later. How to choose an app or practice service

Five questions to ask before you download or pay:

• Are the questions built on UHR's material? The official study material is the only known basis for what the test covers. A service that doesn't start there is guessing.
• Does the format match? Multiple-choice questions with four options, one correct. True/false and free-text answers do not reflect the test.
• Do you get an explanation for the answer? An answer key without reasoning teaches you that one question, not the subject.
• Is there a free tier? You should be able to judge the quality before paying.
• Is the service clear that it is not official? An app hinting that it holds the test's questions is either misinformed or dishonest.

Do you need to download an app at all?

Not necessarily. Practice services that run in your phone's browser give you the same thing without installing anything, and UHR's own material is available as a PDF and audio files directly on uhr.se.

• Our questions are not test questions. They are written by us based on the knowledge areas in UHR's material. They resemble the test's format, but they do not come from the test.
