Swedish citizenship test: UHR's 5 official example questions
UHR's five official example questions for the Swedish citizenship test, each with the correct answer, an explanation and its topic. Plus more to practise.
In July 2026 UHR published the first official example questions for the Swedish citizenship test — five questions that show what the real test questions can look like. Here you'll find all five, each with the correct answer, an explanation and the topic it belongs to. Five questions aren't enough to practise with, though: on medborgaretest.se you train with over 1000 practice questions in the same format, built on the same study material (Sverige i fokus) the test rests on — try one right below.
What does freedom of speech mean under Swedish law?
UHR's five official example questions
UHR published the questions on uhr.se and describes them as examples of "how the test questions may be designed". Here is how the five look, with an explanation of why the correct answer is correct — and why the other options are not. (The questions are on the test in Swedish; translated here for reference.)
1. The task of the public sector
What is the primary task of the public sector?
- A) To run businesses for profit
- B) To provide welfare services such as healthcare and education
- C) To formulate and enact new laws
- D) To represent Sweden internationally
Correct answer: B. The public sector — the state, the regions and the municipalities — is financed through taxes and its primary task is to provide welfare such as healthcare, schools and social care. Running businesses for profit (A) belongs to the private sector, enacting laws (C) is the Riksdag's task, and representing Sweden internationally (D) is a narrow part of the government's work. This question belongs to the topic of welfare and how Sweden is governed.
2. Sweden's head of state
What title does Sweden's head of state hold?
- A) Speaker of the Riksdag
- B) King
- C) County Governor
- D) Prime Minister
Correct answer: B. Sweden is a constitutional monarchy, and the head of state is the King — a ceremonial role without political power. The Speaker (A) leads the work of the Riksdag, a County Governor (C) is the state's representative in a county, and the Prime Minister (D) leads the government but is the head of government, not the head of state. This question belongs to the topic of how Sweden is governed.
3. Sweden's natural resources
Which Swedish natural resource has long been of great importance to Sweden's economy?
- A) Natural gas
- B) Oil
- C) Forest
- D) Uranium
Correct answer: C. Forest has for centuries been one of Sweden's most important natural resources, sometimes called "green gold" — the forestry industry is still a major export sector. Sweden has no significant extraction of natural gas (A) or oil (B), and uranium (D) is not mined commercially. This question belongs to the topic of Sweden's geography and economy.
4. Sweden and Finland
Which country was part of Sweden for almost 700 years, until 1809?
- A) Norway
- B) Finland
- C) Denmark
- D) Estonia
Correct answer: B. Finland was part of the Swedish realm for roughly 600–700 years, until Sweden lost Finland to Russia in 1809. Norway (A) entered a union with Sweden only in 1814, Denmark (C) was a separate kingdom and a historical rival, and parts of Estonia (D) belonged to Sweden during its era as a great power but only for a shorter period. This question belongs to the topic of Sweden's history.
5. Freedom of expression on social media
A person writes a social media post criticising a political proposal. Which option best describes how freedom of expression works?
- A) The person may only express positive opinions about political proposals
- B) The person may express their opinion as long as what is written does not break the law
- C) The person must first ask permission to write the post
- D) The person may not name the politicians who made the proposal
Correct answer: B. Freedom of expression is protected in fundamental law and gives the right to express opinions and criticise those in power — but it has legal limits, for example defamation and incitement against an ethnic group. You need neither stick to positive opinions (A), ask permission (C), nor avoid naming politicians (D). This is an applied question: it tests whether you understand the principle, not whether you recall a fact. This question belongs to the topic of human rights.
What the five questions reveal about the test
Five questions aren't many, but they say something about the whole test:
- Two kinds of question. Questions 1–4 are factual, while question 5 is an applied question where you reason from a principle. The test is therefore not only rote memorisation. More on this in the walkthrough of the test question format and types.
- Broad spread. In just five questions UHR covers welfare, the system of government, geography, history and rights. The test's roughly 60 questions can come from any of the material's thirteen chapters, which cover the seven knowledge areas.
- Close-lying options. The distractors are deliberately tempting — Prime Minister versus King, Norway versus Finland. They test whether you can tell concepts apart, not just recognise a word.
Five examples aren't enough – how to practise more
The official examples show the format, but cover a vanishingly small part of the content. To feel confident you need to practise broadly and find your weak spots.
The easiest way is to work through Sverige i fokus area by area and then train with questions. On medborgaretest.se you practise with over 1000 practice questions in the same multiple-choice format and see right away which topics you need to build out. If you want more worked examples with explanations, there are twelve in the article on sample questions with answers, and a guide to practising questions smartly.
FAQ
Where can I find official example questions for the Swedish citizenship test?
UHR published five official example questions on uhr.se in July 2026, under About the citizenship test. They are the only official example questions UHR has published so far — and UHR has not released a complete official question bank.
How many official example questions are there?
Five. They cover the public sector, Sweden's head of state, natural resources, history (Finland) and freedom of expression. Beyond these five, UHR has not published any further official test questions.
Are the example questions the same as the ones on the test?
No. UHR describes them as examples of how the test questions may be designed. The real questions are drawn from the study material Sverige i fokus, and the test contains around 60 questions. The examples show format and level, not the whole content.
Where can I practise more than the five official questions?
On medborgaretest.se you can start practising for free with over 1000 practice questions in the same multiple-choice format, built on the same knowledge areas. UHR's study material Sverige i fokus is also free to download.
